The 4T revives the Punta Colonet megaproject in Baja California

The federal and Baja California governments plan to “dust off” the Punta Colonet project that the Fox and Calderón PAN administrations failed to carry out: a megaport with the capacity to receive more than two million containers a year and that would compete with the saturated Long Beach and Los Angeles piers. The project has the endorsement of President López Obrador and work is already under way to create the company that will take charge of the operation.

16 years after the suspension of what would be the fourth most important cabotage port in the world and one of the most cherished plans by the PAN governments, the Punta Colonet project re-emerges, now hand in hand with the Morena administration.

In addition, the actors that almost two decades ago bid hard to keep the port: Hutchinson Port Holding, a Chinese company promoted by the then governor of the entity, Eugenio Elorduy Walther, as well as the former governor, Ernesto Ruffo Appel.

The concession is already agreed upon and accepted at the presidential level. Although it is still necessary to form the government company that is going to deliver it, the Secretaries of the Navy and of Communications and Transportation have already told the governor that the project is going ahead.

PERSONAL OPINION

It is a very common situation that some projects, works and programs are left halfway as government administrations change in our country. It is, without a doubt, a very large waste of resources and money, a clear example is the cancellation of the airport in Texcoco and that of this work that was stopped for 16 years in Baja California, for which I consider it to be good news that actions are being reactivated to finish it.

This project is a clear example of how we can advantageously use everything that our country offers us, such as its strategic geographic location and all the characteristics of the location. If this project is carried out correctly, we will benefit from its preparation (with the attraction of foreign direct investment that it can bring) to its start-up, because it means obtaining a competitive advantage, being able to streamline some of the country's logistics processes. and in the long run have some economic prosperity in the area.

It is nice to read this type of news because, among all the negative things that can be said about our country, it is also true that we can achieve projects that are on a par with others carried out in already developed countries.
