Baja California registers high cost of insecurity to companies

The state of Baja California ranks first nationally in cost of insecurity, indicates the National Survey of Victimization of Companies 2022. The document indicates that companies spent 95,631 pesos in 2021 on protection measures and losses as a result of crime.

The cost at the state level exceeds the cost registered in Mexico City, with 95 thousand 128 pesos and that of Guanajuato of 90 thousand 088 pesos. The main crime committed in Baja California last year was extortion, which registered an expansion in the country, going from 13 states in 2019 to 21 in 2021.

Last year, Baja California registered a criminal incidence rate for acts of corruption of 723 cases for every 10,000 economic units. In this sense, Baja California ranked fifth nationally, behind Mexico City, Quintana Roo, Guanajuato and Oaxaca.

Theft or assault of goods or money is the second most committed crime in Baja California after extortion.

Something positive that the state registered was the change in the affectation of companies by informal trade or illegal products. The percentage of companies affected by this problem fell from 9.9 percent to 6.9 percent between 2019 and 2021. In 2021, Baja California ranked third among the least affected companies in the country.

PERSONAL OPINION

Insecurity in our country is a big problem that affects all Mexicans. If we see it from a business perspective, the fact that companies want to protect themselves or heal the effects of crime represents a high cost, so this problem ends up impacting the economy much more than one would think. The reality is that it is very difficult for there to be an incentive for investment in states that present figures as high as is the case of Baja California and if there is no investment, there is no job creation and no economic growth.

Fighting insecurity has been an issue for many governments that unfortunately have not achieved a solution, so just if we isolate the problem to exclusively economic terms, I think that the state could focus on granting companies some kind of insurance or incentives that encourage them to continue being part of the economic activity of the state. This will not to eliminate insecurity, but rather to mitigate its effects on the economy.

Now, I think that we can even see this issue in a microeconomic way, in which we also seek to take out insurance that protects us from theft, robbery, etc. and whether or not we have this insurance, the cost of crime is very high, which also maintains a population that lives in constant uncertainty.
