Baja California Sur: environmental contingency declared in Playa Balandra due to diesel spill.

The Balandra Flora and Fauna Protection Area, in the state of Baja California Sur, is permanently closed after state authorities declared an environmental contingency due to the fuel spill in its instances. It was last Sunday when a boat caught fire nearby, causing fuel to spill into the crystal clear waters of one of the most emblematic and iconic beaches in the state.

According to the Civil Protection Office of Baja California Sur, the incident occurred during the early morning and the boat was identified as "Fortius", 24 feet long and four wide, which was submerged on the beach causing severe ecological damage.

It is worth mentioning that after the fire, the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) rescued twelve people who were on board the yacht; later it was reported that they did not present injuries and that they were in good health.

After a tour carried out by the authorities, a considerable amount of hydrocarbons was found, for which it was necessary to close the beach until further notice so that the responsible company can work on the cleaning tasks and, in this way, also safeguard the safety of the visitors.

PERSONAL OPINION

This type of news is a clear example of the strong impact that humanity has with its ecosystem. We cannot stop doing our daily activities or stop taking advantage of the natural resources that surround us and as much as we are seeking to be more and more careful and take measures that reduce our footprint on the environment, sometimes it seems impossible. In some section of the news it is mentioned that retaliation against the responsible company could not be presented because it was an accident, it is impossible to prevent a boat fire.

For me, the most affected ones at the moment are the inhabitants of the area, who in some way suffer the consequences of this contamination, so despite the fact that the company does not receive any type of sanction, it is important that they join their efforts with the government to clean this beach as soon as possible.

Seeing one of the most beautiful landscapes in our country in these conditions is extremely sad, because despite the fact that this time it was an accident, there have been many other landscapes and especially beaches that have been deteriorating over time due to neglect and the lack of importance of those who visit these places. It is everyone's responsibility to preserve these spaces that are part of our country and our culture.
