Lithium for Mexico: AMLO appoints Alfonso Durazo as coordinator and company will settle in Sonora

Lithium for Mexico, whose acronym is LitioMx, is the name of the decentralized body that was proposed in the reform of the Mining Law sent by López Obrador to the Congress of the Union and approved at the end of April of this year.

Governor Alfonso Durazo was appointed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to coordinate the newly created company that will be installed in the state of Sonora.

In addition, the state government will have a share within the organization that will be dedicated to the exploration, exploitation, benefit and use of lithium located in national territory.

During the morning conference, the president affirmed that, hand in hand with the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, a plan is being worked on so that the state can generate renewable and clean energy.

“The aim is to promote the automotive industry in Sonora, take advantage of what is already available. The generation plant with solar energy has already started and it will be the largest plant in Latin America,” said the president.

In addition, the head of the Executive added that Lithium for Mexico will depend on the Ministry of Energy and will be a company similar to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex).

PERSONAL OPINION

The exploitation of the resources available in nature is one of the most primitive activities of the human being. In the specific case of lithium, we are talking about a very valuable mineral that can generate many profits for the countries that resort to it.

Regarding the matter, what caught my attention the most is that our president intends to maintain LitioMx as a gubernamental company, with the aim, in theory, that the benefits are going to be address to Mexicans and not for foreign companies. However, this promise that there will be great benefits for the Mexican community does not seem real, because when I searched for more information about it, I found that at this point, where everything is supposed to be almost done, there is still no well-drawn public plan that specifies basic things about the project such as how it will be financed or the quantities of lithium that are intended to be exploited.

Looking at the panorama from a positive perspective, I believe that the exploitation of this resource or any other can boost innovation and development in our country if it is carried out correctly. At this point, I hope that the issues of environmental care and the quality of life of the communities where the exploitation centers are going to be established will be taken into account, since they are often overlooked.
