INM identifies almost 32 thousand irregular migrants in Baja California during 2022

During the supervision and evaluation meeting of the Representative Office in Baja California, held at the Technological Institute of Tijuana, the commissioner of the National Migration Institute (INM), Francisco Garduño Yáñez, was informed that between January and September 2022, that agency rescued 31 thousand 907 foreign migrants, while in the same period of the previous year there were 25 thousand 155 people.

At the meeting it was reported that these irregular migrants come mainly from Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Russia. In addition, the event explained that, as part of the actions to guarantee safe, orderly and regular migration with full respect for human rights, 127 verification requests were made in hotels where 469 foreigners were rescued.

The body of the Ministry of the Interior highlighted that Baja California is one of the main points of entry into the country, as it registered until August 2022 a migratory flow of 1,436,387 land entries. On the other hand, from January to September of this year, the state of Baja California received 99,918 nationals from the United States for repatriation.

The repatriated nationals are mainly from Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Veracruz, Puebla, Michoacán, Jalisco, the State of Mexico, Sinaloa and Baja California, who were given support to return to their entity and advice to reintegrate into Mexican society.

PERSONAL OPINION

It is well known that the effects of migration are many and varied and I believe that this issue has always been relevant to our country. The fact that Mexico is one of the countries with the most transit of migrants is not new. However, I think I had never considered the fact that each state has different inflows and effects due to its geographical position. As mentioned in the news, Baja California is one of the main recipients of people in migrant status, due to its geographical proximity to their main destination: the United States.

At this point, it is important to remember that migration has an impact on many spheres of a region, such as demography, economy and culture, so I am not surprised that it is the subject of research, of meetings to address the issue and actions to prevent or reverse it. For example, it is curious how they mention that Baja California has received many deportations of Mexicans from the United States, which gives them asylum and helps them reintegrate into society, but in reality that does not change the reasons why they decided to migrate from the country in the first time.

In a nutshell, the issue of migration has many implications, aspects and causes, much of which has to do with geography and the economy.
